Win over Northwood

Looks like things are starting to brighten up for the Dustdevil Women’s Soccer Team. After suffering four defeats in a row, the women’s soccer troop defeated former rival the Northwood Nights.

The Dustdevils proved to be a little to much to handle for the Lady Nights. The Lady Nights only managed to get one goal through the Dustdevil defense.

Stephanie Webb (#14) had been drawing much of the attention due to her commanding of the ball during home games, but with the Northwood victory, others have stepped up the line joining Webb (Selina Gusman, Dalia Hernandez and Sandy Hernandez).

The Dustdevils had not tasted victory since the Sept. 9 defeat of Monterrey Tech. That victory was short lived after several losses, including a 17 point loss to Montana State – Billings Soccer Team (Yellow Jackets) on Sept. 16.

Whatever strategies the Lady Dustdevils played at Northwood worked for the team.

According to Coach Anna Girdwood, “NCAA Division II games are at a higher level (than the former division), the girls have to believe in their ability (to win).”

Now for some game highlights courtesy of the Athletics Department:

Sept. 25 – Texas A&M International University snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominating 7-1 road win over Northwood on Friday. Selina Gusman, Dalia Hernandez and Sandy Hernandez scored two goals apiece for the Dustdevils with Rosa Hernandez contributing a single goal.

The win was the first ever against Northwood, a former Red River Athletic Conference foe. NU now leads the all-time series, 6-1-1.
