A moment with the student government president

I think our actions speak louder than words. I want to congratulate everybody. We are doing a great job. We have accomplished A LOT of things and we have only been here for ONE MONTH!

These are the main issues we have accomplished (or started) on our first month:

– HB 153: “Thank you letter” and “Thank You Bill” were just mailed to Austin.

– Sen. Trujillo is coordinating the proposal of creating a dance major at TAMIU. There will be tables in the Student Center next week at noon on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 2-4) to get signatures.

– TAMIU Live!: Frances Meneses, chair, is in the process of creating the schedule, registering the event and coordinating all the food and fundraising issues, we will have a meeting with the Red Cross sometime during the next weeks or as soon as we get approval.

 – Problem Solvers: We are getting many complaints about the HigherOne debit card, most of them are misunderstandings and they have been addressed without major problems. Some senators have already been solving some assigned problems. A list detailing these cases will be released later.

– AutMus Fest: We got a lot of volunteers for this event thanks to the tables we set up in the Student Center 2 weeks ago.

– Mail Forwarding: After discussing this idea with OIT, students are now able to forward their TAMIU email accounts to other emails. SG will develop a flyer with the instructions on how to do it.

– Advertisement: Our current advertising campaign is really working as we have seen, however we need to create a new one to get more attention. Marc Andres, PR chair, has just released the new SG marketing campaign. Some ads are already in the bulletin boards. He has a lot of projects in mind and they are great!

– SG Positions: We have currently 18 members (2 year high), ALL WITH OFFICE HOURS, and we still have more than 10+ applications pending. With the assistanship program we should double this amount and get to 50+ members. Have you seen our weekly office hour schedule, isnt it great?

– SG Webpage: We are getting many hits daily. It has been a hit, especially getting applications for SG and making our minutes available to everybody.

 – Judicial Meetings: Held every week!

 – Big Event: I already started designing this project; we still need a chair to coordinate this event.

 – TAMIU Early High School: We are looking into incorporating a non-voting senator from the Early High School into the Student Government Senate.

 – Effective next week the office hour calendar will be posted on all the bulletin boards.

 – We have increased student representation in public forums, University Standing Committees and Faculty Senate.

Thanks,

Rodrigo Coutino
