Volleyball: Lady Dustdevils shine as NCAA newcomers, earn honors

Laredo – Six members of the Texas A&M International University volleyball squad have earned Heartland Conference postseason honors. TAMIU finished with a 12-2 record against Heartland opponents in its first season as a NCAA Division II provisional member.Headlining TAMIU’s postseason selections were first-team pick Eliza Cezario and second-team selections Desiree Arredondo and Michelle Castañeda. All three student-athletes earned All-Red River Athletic Conference honors last season.Nicole Gipson and Juliana Gusmáo earned honorable mention All-Conference honors. Genevieve Treviño was named Co-Freshman of the Year, along with UT-Permian Basin’s Molly Atnip.Nov. 8 – UT-Pan American defeated Texas A&M International (30-24, 32-20, 30-27) in the season finale for both teams on Tuesday night in Edinburg.Despite the loss the Dustdevils achieved a very successful season in their first campaign as a NCAA Division II provisional member of the Heartland Conference. TAMIU (24-5 overall) recorded a 12-2 record against Heartland opponents while also setting a school record for overall winning percentage (.828). That mark betters the .793 winning percentage achieved in the program’s inaugural season in 2002 when the Dustdevils went 23-6.
