EDITOR SAYS…It’s time to talk about the paper

The Bridge is the students’ newspaper; we are here to inform all of the student body of the issues that are important in the best manner that we can.

The student newspaper is once again available online as it once was several years ago. The difference now is that the website is part of a network consisting of hundreds of other college newspapers from across America. I thank my advisor, Mr. Mark Webber, for his efforts in ensuring that the voice of the students of Texas A&M International University is available online for the world to read. I encourage as many members of the university community log onto www.thebridgenewspaper.com and register to receive our online version. You can now “get” the paper no matter where you go.

In this first issue of the semester we are including the advertisement of a local nightclub establishment. This is the first time that the student newspaper (here at TAMIU) has been able to advertise all members of our Laredo community and we are extremely thankful for the opportunity to be able to do so. Our university community is a very diverse one and we recognize the need to cater to all of our student readers’ needs. The age groups on campus vary as much as the international faces. Whenever we do feature an advertisement from any location that caters to an over 21 years of age customer base, we will specify within the advertisement the age requirements.

Our next issues of the student newspaper will contain more campus news coverage as well a wider range in what we cover in all areas.

When I first became editor, one of the things I committed myself to was to increase the number of student reporters and other important student staff positions. The faculty members of The Bridge Faculty Advisory Board (B-FAB as I call it) have been extremely helpful in making any achievement of the newspaper possible. Dr. Kati Pletsch de Garcia, in particular, has always supported the student newspaper and ensured for its success. Through hard work and dedication, we have accomplished many of our goals and are setting new ones. Dr. Lynda Brown has also been an important contributor to the success of the newspaper, her advertising expertise is of great value.

We, the student reporters, will ask the questions that are of significance to you, our readers. We will not settle for anything else other than the complete story. It is our job to make sure you are kept up to date and informed about YOUR university.

In order to accomplish this task the following people have been selected as part of our staff:

Mohsen Omar – Political Correspondent /Campus Events Writer

JJ Velasquez – Men’s Sports WriterCinthia Sierra – Women’s Sports WriterBrenda De Leon – Campus Events WriterJonathan Becerra – Photographer

I look forward to a very productive semester with this new staff, I know that they all extremely passionate about writing.

In addition to news writing and our other traditional features, the student newspaper will also contain a police blogger. I have asked University Police Chief Felipe Garza for his assistance in making this available to our readers. It is important for the university community to know of what happens on campus, it is your community. These are just a few of the changes that our newspaper is going through.

The Bridge cannot perform well without the input of you, our readers. We have message boards available online as well as campus beat and entertainment spaces incase you wish to make article submissions. We welcome ‘letters to the editor’ or opinion pieces to voice your concerns over any aspects of the newspaper or the university community. We want to hear from you.

These are my thoughts, let’s hear yours. Write to me at:
