Healthy start to spring

Students were able to partake in Spring Break Revolution, an event aimed at providing students with information that can assist them in making informed choices concerning their health for the rest of the spring semester and their lives.

According to Angelina Cantrell, director of Student Health Services, the event also served the purpose of a mini vacation.

“We wanted to provide students with a much needed break from academic stressors by entering a ‘virtual beach,'” said Cantrell.

The event featured a beach theme complete with sea shell necklaces and “floating” glass bottle messages.

“I loved it! It was nice, informative and colorful. It was a real treat for them to throw an event like Spring Break Revolution for us,” said Liliana Saldana, a sophomore.

“My favorite booth that I visited was the sun tan booth…the information was great,” added Saldana.

Spring Break Revolution, which took about a month for an committee to plan took place on Feb 27, just before students were able to go off on their own Spring Break.

“Our main goal was to raise awareness among the students regarding their safety and well being,” added Cantrell.

Cantrell commented on the event as being a success in accomplishing the goals that had been laid out by the committee.

“We are thrilled with the event! We received tremendous positive feedback from the students concerning the value of the information they received.  There were smiles all around. Students loved the fruit, the drinks, the make-overs by the Mary K consultants, Dance, Dance Revolution, and they enjoyed the speakers,” noted Cantrell.

The feature speaker at the event was Deanna Latson, nationally known for her talks on nutrition and health.

A number of attendees commented that they have since made changes in their eating and lifestyle habits as a result of Latson’s presentation.

“I thought that (Latson) was very well informed and gave solid advice as to how to change our lifestyles to more healthy ones that could help us live longer,” said Leah Toner, a junior Sports and Fitness major.

Cantrell also remarked about students receiving free flu and tetanus vaccinations at the Spring Break Revolution (as is the case with this student writer – I got both shots!).

“Ultimately, students were having fun while getting valuable information to help them in making wise decisions,” noted Cantrell.
