New athletic director Snell joins university

In May Dr. Debbie Snell, the new athletic director for TAMIU, moved into Laredo ready to take the responsibilities necessary to succeed in her new job.So now the question is, what can be expected in the years to come for the athletic department with a new athletic director? One look at her background shows Snell brings considerable experience and knowledge to the TAMIU athletic department. She was previously the associate director of athletics at Campbell University in North Carolina, a NCAA Division I institution, and was also the assistant director of athletics for Palm Beach Atlantic University, a NCAA Division II university. However, it is Snell’s motivation and positive attitude towards her new position that will help TAMIU athletics the most.”I’m very excited to be at TAMIU; the administration recognizes the value and contribution made by athletics and is very supportive of our integration into the complete educational experience,” Snell said.Snell recognizes the work needed to clear the NCAA Provisional Membership and has worked in that position in the past; therefore, her short-term goal is to “become a full member of the NCAA Division II by the end of the 2007-2008 school year.”In order to accomplish her goal, Snell realizes the importance of a good and stable coaching staff.”We will recruit experienced and motivated NCAA coaches and help them succeed; as we build a community and family atmosphere here in Laredo, coaches will not want to leave,” Snell said. The opportunity to clear for the NCAA Division is in the near future and a stable coaching staff and spirited campus can also be expected.”We definitely would like to invite everyone to come and be a part of what’s going on in TAMIU athletics; come make our student section the best in the Heartland Conference,” she said.
