In the last issue, we published an article concerning the use of foul language by the media and everyday people. Everyone is subject to foul language. You hear it on television, music, movies, or when you’re walking in the mall. It is not easy to block it off anymore. One has to wonder, where do you cross the line?
As the article from the last issue stated, profanity should be used with responsibility. It’s great that people want to use their freedom of speech to express themselves; however, we need to keep in mind that there are innocent minds of the future listening.
I spoke to a few people concerning the issue and they said, “So we can use obscene words, but we can’t talk as freely when it comes to God.”
This topic of God vs. foul language is a touchy subject for people. According to WorldNetDaily.com, students at a high school in Boulder, Colorado staged a protest, in which they stated it was unfair to make them recite the Pledge of Alligence. One student stated that church and state should not be mixed. Students offered an alternative pledge, which states:
“I pledge allegiance to the flag and my constitutional rights with which it comes. And to the diversity, in which our nation stands, one nation, part of one planet, with liberty, freedom, choice and justice for all.”
This alternative may not fare well with people who believe in God or individuals who are patriotic.
According to Galluppoll.com, about 9 out of 10 Americans believe in God or a higher being. However, as the Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” which implies that there will be a separation of church and state.
What would our nation’s founding fathers say? What did they intend? Where does the line cross between God and foul language? How about other controversial subjects, such as abortion, violence, and capital punishment? That’s a whole different can of worms, but controversy amongst these subjects are currently underway and have been for a while. Where do you stand on God vs. foul language and the other issues stated? Let us know!
