DJ Tanki Pink spins for Laredo

Music is usually the main attraction at clubs and bars. If the DJ entertains a full crowd, mission accomplished. Most DJs are men, such as DJ Flaco and DJ Big Lou, but this summer one special DJ caught my attention. For the past year, Tania Denise Plasencia, a.k.a. DJ Tanki Pink, has attracted crowds in the hottest clubs in Laredo and San Antonio. Her remix of each track, with smooth transitions from old school beats to the latest hits, gives the audience enough energy to keep wanting more.Plasencia’s career began when a passion for music led her to ask DJ Big Lou from the former F-bar to teach her how to deejay. Since then, she has enjoyed tremendous success at the local club scene.”Other bars I have done include Bleu Room in Laredo, and I have also done several bars in San Antonio such as Tryst, in which I have a residency every Thursday, Medusa every Saturday, Rain Ultra Lounge, Marco and the View,” says the 21-year-old DJ.When asked what has been her favorite show, Plasencia said, “My favorite show… would have to be at Sky Lounge in Austin, TX, where I saw deadmau5. Another show I really enjoyed would have to be Sander van Doorn, also at Sky Lounge.”She does insist, however, that Austin is very crazy, but she would love to keep playing there because of electronica’s popularity. Her dreams also include traveling outside of Texas. “If I could do any show I would love to do Ultra in Miami,” she said. “That, however, is for the Big Leagues ….but a girl can dream, can’t she?”Determined to hone her skills, Plasencia says she is “never satisfied at what level I am …the only thing I want is to keep improving.” Some people argue she gets gigs because she is female, but Plasencia believes otherwise. “I know a lot of female DJs who are excellent, and that’s what I want to do. I want to prove that I can be just as good a guy,” said Plasencia. “However, there are a lot of supporters, and they enjoy what I do. That is the important thing.”For those interested in becoming a DJ, she offers the following advice.”One thing is love for the music. Another is know your music and most importantly learn how to read the crowd,” Plasencia added. “You’re the entertainer, and it’s important to keep the people moving.”Plascencia also has interests outside of the music world. Currently, she is attending UTSA, majoring in Economics and planning to graduate in December. After obtaining her bachelors, she plans to go to law school and continue playing at clubs and bars.Though still a beginner, this fun-loving and intelligent performer is a talented DJ. Without a doubt, she will continue to give Laredoans one great show after another. For more information on DJ Tanki Pink and her upcoming gigs, visit www.myspace.com/tan23.
