The women’s soccer team faced nationally ranked Incarnate Word on Friday, Oct. 3 and lost with a final score of 11-0.The Dustdevils were playing without standout forward Melissa Medrano (due to health issues) and Cassie Delgado, a mid-fielder, who got hurt early in the game.”Losing Delgado early in the game affected us because she is an instrumental player; also, both of our goalies had bad games,” said Head Coach Anna Girdwood.The Incarnate Word Cardinals scored their first three goals within the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back.The first half ended with an insurmountable Incarnate Word lead of 6-0.Mary Jo Hall, the starting goal keeper for the Dustdevils, said, “It’s hard to see your team break down, but after three years of losing, one’s confidence tends to easily break down.”In the second half the Lady Cardinals continued to dominate, and they scored five more goals to end the game at 11-0.The Lady Cardinals had a total of 32 shots while the Dustdevils had only one.”Soccer is our passion, and it’s what keeps us going; all we can do is keep our heads up,” said Valeria Chavez, a senior on the team.The Incarnate Word win wraps up a 2-0 season sweep over the Dustdevils.”Maybe, and just maybe, more players should be recruited rather than bodies,” said a person in the crowd who chose to remain anonymous.”All we can do is look forward to our next game and forget about this one, ” Captain Rosa Hernandez said”We have to essentially keep working on executing our fundamentals,” said Coach Girdwood. “This will carry us through such a bad loss and give us the confidence to move on.”
