Local talent honored at Sledge TV awards

Local musicians came out to the Sound Art Space on Feb. 13 for the second annual Sledge TV Awards, a ceremony that honored a year of great performances and rewarded those who bring Laredo’s music scene to life.

The awards were hosted by Sledge TV, and according to its official Myspace page (www.myspace.com/sledgetv), the award ceremony was “a collaborative project between Sledge 641 [productions] and The Night Scene.net aimed at showcasing Laredo’s own cache of underground talent.”

The awards show had many sponsors: The CW Laredo, Palms Sushi Lounge, Lazy Daze Counterculture, Studio V2, and Kripto GFX, among others.

The event had an atmosphere that could be considered a mix of the Grammy’s and MTV Music Awards: attendees wore black ball gowns, cocktail dresses, and business wear. The finery gave the ceremony an elegant flair, yet the musicians’ attitudes made the night casual and fun.

The ceremony began with performances by Narcolepsy, Ant Leon, and The Pop Rocks. Then, Jerry (the host of Sledge TV’s videos) stepped to the podium and presented the first set of awards.

He thanked the sponsors and distributed the award for “Best Bassist” (Danny from On Hiatus), “Best Guitarist” (Fred Barretta from On Hiatus), “Best Drummer” (Curly from Roar Shot Blind), “Best Front man/woman” (Mayra from Fo9), “Best Recording” (DamNation by E!ite), and “Best New Band” (On Hiatus).

During intermission, Bones “The Sleazy Rocker” played an acoustic set and Bacchanalian Bliss executed a rare Ska/Punk/Rock concert.

After the performances, the next round of awards were announced: “Best DJ of The Year” (DJ CZR), “Best Road Band” (Girl In A Coma), “Best Venue” (Average Joe’s Sports Bar), and “Best Show” (“Battle of The Bands” at Club Tonic).

The Laredo CW’s own Max Fernandez and Victoria Marshall took it upon themselves to recognize Laredo’s “Best Band of The Year:” Fo9-Fallen on September.

Immediately following the announcement, E!ite took the stage and delivered a tongue-twisting performance.

Later, The Shazz and D.E.S.T.R.O. rocked the Sound Art Space with their funky style. Fo9 finished the night by proving why they are Laredo’s Best Band with a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, drum-smashing concert.

Video coverage of the event will soon be released on www.thenightscene.net, www.sledgetvbootleg.com, and The Laredo CW channel.
