DPsi host sex ed. talk

On Tuesday, March 10, at the Residential Learning Center classroom, Delta Psi Alpha Multicultural Co-Ed Fraternity (DPsi) hosted SEX and Blowpops Awareness, which featured guest speaker Elizabeth Dodier, R.N.

DPsi welcomed their guests with a smile, a handshake, and an assortment of pamphlets informing students about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

From Student Health Services, Dodier intended to use a power point presentation, but after technical difficulties deterred her original plan, she opted to use printed slides.

Dodier informed students about viruses such as HIV, HPV, and herpes. Parasitical and bacterial infections were also covered.

She went on to speak about treatment and prevention, citing abstinence and condoms as people’s best defense against STDs.

She also urged students to talk to their sexual partner(s).

“Do not take it [prevention] for granted,” Dodier said.

While Dodier didn’t show graphic images in her presentation, one audience member suggested that “everyone take it upon themselves and look at pictures [of STD’s].” He added that pictures go him to be careful.

“Students are very much aware” Dodier said. “They are very much aware, and they are very much scared.”

Coral Flores, DPsi member and event coordinator, believed that this was a step closer to informing those that don’t know. She also believed the presentation had a good turn out and claimed this was an annual event.

“We usually do this every Valentine’s Day, but it got pushed back this year,” Flores said.

Audience members were then asked to participate in games and were given prizes.

Amongst the plethora of information given by Dodier, she emphasized the services that TAMIU’s Health Services offer, such as the free HIV testing on the first Wednesday of every month. The test uses a cheek swab and is completely confidential and free to the student.

In addition, Health Services will hold an HPV vaccination event on April 22. They also offer free condoms for anyone who wants them.

Health Services is located in the Student Center RM 125 and can be reached by phone at (956) 326-2235.
