Have you ever watched Unsolved Mysteries? It’s a bit old, but I fully confess to being a loyal fan; everyone enjoys a good story about the unknown once in awhile. That said, I’ve come to realize I have unanswered questions about some cool and silly occurrences that have happened on campus. The following chronicles my curiosity about these things.
1. Ever notice the “NO HUNTING” sign at the entrance of the campus? It was recently replaced with a less rusty copy. In my experience, I would expect that not hunting on a university campus is common sense. What happened? Did someone actually have to ask if they could come onto campus after class hours to hunt deer? This always unnerves me, as I fret over if someone actually had to enquire whether or not it was prohibited.
2. The rooster. When I was a freshman, there was this colorful rooster that roamed around off-campus. A visiting magician included him in a profile video he made of TAMIU before his showcase performance in the Student Center auditorium. Yet, by my sophomore year, he was nowhere to be seen. So many students missed him that the Student Government even added a “What happened to the rooster?” utility on the webpage that was used at the time.
3. The javelinas. Don’t get me wrong-I adore Dusty the Dustdevil-and was pleased when the student body voted to retain him for the transition to the NCAA. But don’t you think it’s a tad weird that we have a large population of javelinas on campus, whereas our sister institution in Kingsville, so I’ve heard, has a few? Yet they have the javelina as their mascot, and we don’t even acknowledge these little guys? C’mon folks, let’s give these fellers some credit and come up with some kind of javelina-themed tradition. Even the deers get a shout-out in our alma mater!
4. I recall, in the early days of Fall 2007, a rumor that there might be a place reserved in the newly-minted Rec. Sports center for some kind of Wii gaming exercise room. It sounded like an amazing development, and I had hoped that the idea would see fruition, giving an extra incentive to less-than-committed exercisers such as yours truly to make use of the new facilities. Was this idea just an evanescent suggestion or something seriously being considered? Might it happen in the future?
What about you? Do you have any entertaining or odd observations about campus life that you want to share? Respond and discuss! But, please, keep it civil.
