Fun , food and freebies in store at writing event

TTo honor the significance of writing in our community, Texas A&M International University’s Writing Center and the First Year Writing Program will host its very own National Day on Writing event on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

“Write On TAMIU” writing field day event, highlighting writers and their writings, will take place on the green from 10 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. and feature a bevy of events. The field day consists of a series of consecutive workshops, presentations and games devoted to writing. Sponsors for the event have scheduled fun, yet meaningful events that meet the writing needs of the student population.

Event coordinators are Writing Center Director Kimberly Thomas and Interim Writing Program Director Deborah Scaggs. “The purpose of the event is to inspire and encourage a positive perception of writing,” stated a release. “Hopefully this event could also inspire students to continue writing because of the positive reinforcement of having their writings featured on campus.”

Stressing fundamentals, the writing-inspired interactive workshops will teach the importance of skillful writing in a creative, fun and non-threatening environment, the release continued. Topics of the workshops include brainstorming, paragraph structure, introductions, conclusions, grammar, syntax, content development, etc.

Sponsors are hoping to create a culture of writing at the university by inspiring writers to participate outside of the traditional classroom/ lecture environment. Students will be exposed to the diversity, creativity and importance of writing, the release added.

Events include: Slam poetry performances and workshops run non-consecutively from 10 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Grammar and journalism workshops are from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.A One Act Play performance starts at 11:45 a.m.The resume-writing workshop specialized for education majors starts at noon.Playwriting workshop, by Carlos Flores and Joe Molina, will start at noon.Rap performances by Chris and KC start at 1:15 p.m.Microcuentos, mini-fiction Spanish stories by Dr. Cardona, will start at 1:30 p.m.Poetry performances, by Joe Molina and David Cortez, start at 2:45.The GRE Writing workshop will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.(Some events subject to change)
