Most often stress is a major part of a college student life, and this can be more present during midterm and finals week.
Dealing with stress can be painful for any individual luckily there are tips that can help students through these tough times.
One great activity that is recommended by professionals is working out.
As student we have access to a grand recreation center right on campus. Students may want to take advantage of the space available in the weight room or the cardio floor which offer plenty of room to cut off and workout.
For those students that need extra motivation there are several fitness classes that are offered during the week and some even on weekends.
Walking around the REC Center one can ask for student trainers to assist with suggestions on any stress relieving workouts.
One student trainer offered her tips for the perfect workout routine.
“Yoga is a great stress reliever since the atmosphere tends to relax a person with its soft music, and instructors provide the right technique in order to execute breathing exercises. Also Yoga stretches the body which allows the body to get blood circulation flowing,” said Ericka Mendoza.
Most students tend to forget the importance of balancing body and mind during the weeks leading up to midterms or finals.
“There is a bit of a decrease in students that come to workout before midterms. Most of them concentrate a lot on studying and may forget that working out can provide the perfect distraction from hitting the books all day. Even if a student studies all day the brain may become tired. Allowing the mind some rest from reading all those pages and taking a break to do some cardio can really make the body feel more relax,” explained Ericka Mendoza.
Some students seem to have this mentality already, and are finding there way to the REC Center to tackle stress.
“Running or jogging really help clear my mind, and a combination of weight training really takes out some of the frustration that midterms can bring. Plus not only does working out take away stress but it also makes people feel better about themselves,” commented Jennifer Garza, Fitness and Sports major at TAMIU.
The REC Center is offering free Yogilates class which is a combination of Yoga and Pilates during Thursdays at noon. If for some reason the time maybe inconvenient for some there is a full schedule of fitness classes on the REC Sports web site at tamiu.edu.
