Letter from 2010-2011
SGA President
In 2009, the Guinness World Book of Records documented some interesting accomplishments. Among those were: the fastest slap shot ever recorded in the National Hockey League (105.4 mph), a 10-year-old who wore the most socks on one foot (102 socks), the most points scored on a single song of Guitar Hero (973,954 points on ‘Through the Fire and Flames’), and the most people gathered together dressed as nuns (250 people).
In the same year, Texas A&M International University broke some records of its own: an enrollment of over 6,000 students, an incoming freshmen class of over 700 students, and the celebration of our campus’s 40th birthday. These figures might not be on the same playing field as the world’s tallest Mohawk hair-do, but these are records that our institution should be proud of nonetheless!
It will be exciting to continue in utilizing our campus’s great potential and myriad of resources so that the Student Government Association (SGA) can work better towards serving our community.
Be on the look-out for our traditional events like Cover Laredo, International Student Dinner, SGA Promo Week, the ‘Speak Up or Shut Up’ campaign, the Big Event and Dusty Cup!
But also for this upcoming year, SGA has plans to create positions in the Executive Branch to place students working one-on-one with the executive administration on campus. (For example, our Secretary of Finance will work with Juan Castillo, TAMIU’s Vice President of Finance.) Made through recent amendments in our constitution, our International Committee and L.O.V.E. (Leaders Organizing Volunteer Events) Committee are two new committees that students should definitely consider joining. These committees aim to cultivate a more prominent international atmosphere on campus and develop an even more concentrated effort to make a widespread impact on the Laredo community through service projects.
SGA is a group of dedicated individuals who volunteer their time in reaching out to their peers, using the ideas and opinions gathered to collaborate with faculty and staff in order to make any positive change at TAMIU. If you want to enrich your university experience, you should consider joining SGA.
I guarantee that you will work with a group of people that have pride and passion so contagious, it will be an experience of a lifetime. Plans for the 2010-2001 school year are in honor of our 2009-2010 SGA members who began a ferocious flame, passed the torch and left some big shoes to fill.
I leave you today with a Latin phrase: ‘Crescuit Eundo’ (It grows as it goes.) For members of the community who want to make a difference in any way they can: pick up a piece of trash, hold the door open for someone, or return, let’s say, a lost cell phone to the Police Department.
It may not be the same as making the world’s largest commercially available hamburger or being the oldest person alive, but every little bit contributes to TAMIU’s growth at a record breaking pace.
Signed,
Mark Garner
SGA President, 2010-11
