Students who are taking University Seminar have the chance to win a paid trip to Cambodia by entering an essay competition.
Since Fall 2008, Texas A&M International University has engaged in Reading the Globe: The Freshman Experience. Jose Ramon Lara, a TAMIU Junior who went on the first Reading the Globe excursion expressed, “In essence, my experience with Reading the Globe taught me the importance of every individual no matter their race, heritage, sexual orientation, or social status; we must value diversity.”
During this period university students are assigned books for common read. This year’s book features Somaly Mam’s, “The Road of Lost Innocence”. Students read the book with the occasion to discuss their feelings or perspectives in their University Seminar course. Now students will have the chance to further contemplate their ideas by writing “the essay” which can send them to Cambodia in Spring Break 2011.
The topic is “How has reading The Road of Lost Innocence influenced your view of the world and your particular place in it?” The essay consisting of 1,000-1,500 words is due at midnight on Oct 11, 2010. Students will be able to submit their essay through the “Reading the Globe, Fall 2010 Essay Competition” drop box in Angel.
Every essay turned in which followed the guidelines will be read by a committee that will select the twenty five best essays. These twenty-five students will then be interviewed where fifteen will come out victorious.
Students who wish to participate are to be first time freshman,18 years old and not allergic to peanuts or bee/ant stings. The fifteen students selected are required to have malaria medication, current Passport, and personal spending money.
