Interested in a workout that will give you results while having fun? Zumba is a mix of Latin dances that guarantees an intense workout and smiles at the same time. Sandra Leal, Dance and Fitness Instructor, makes sure her students dance their way to weight loss or to maintain their weight.

Classes take placeat the Rec Center, room 205 are every Tuesday and Thursday at 5 p.m., Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday at 12:20 p.m. Leal trains students by teaching students choreography of Latin dances Leal stands in front of her students and demonstrates every step for her students to follow. Music varies from Salsa, Merengue, Cumbias, Reggeaton, and Bachata play while Leal shows her routine to the Zumba students. Zumba is not just about physical exercise but also a place where people can learn about Latin cultures. The Zumba class almost every day gets packed with dedicated regulars and new comers wanting to give it a try.
“People enjoy Zumba because they get hooked and commit,” said Leal.
Manuel Morales, TAMIU Sophomore, is a dedicated Zumba regular who has been coming to the class every Tuesday, Thursday and some Fridays, since late August. “I’ve lost 10 pounds!” said Morales.
Zumba is a great workout because with one session, learners can burn up to 700 calories. “Everyone should try Zumba, you don’t have to know how to dance, it’s about wanting to dance” said Leal.
This type of dancing is one of the most effective workout alternatives that will grant great physical and health related results. It is cardio combined with core and all over body conditioning. Zumba students who are interested in weight loss or to maintain weight would get the exercise required to achieve their weight related goals. According to Leal, students dance their way through the session, energy and commitment is something that becomes an inevitable part of their workout.
“Once you start, you stay” said Leal.
