Women’s Soccer Drops Season Finale to U.T. Permian Basin

Laredo, Texas – Despite outshooting their opponents 15-9 Tuesday night, the Texas A&M International University Women’s Soccer Team closed out the regular season with their ninth straight loss, falling to U.T. Permian Basin 1-0.

Kirsten Jennings (Junior, Martinez, CA) and Shelby Williams (Sophomore, Newport Beach, CA) combined for eight total shots on the night, but were never able to best keeper Alexis Frueh, who finished with a match high nine saves.  Hannah Dozier led the Falcons scoring the only goal of the night.

Dozier’s goal came in the 15th minute of the game, set up by a nice touch pass from Kaylen Gerkey.  Despite shooting from a tough angle, Dozier was able to bend the ball passed the outstretched hands of TAMIU keeper Noemi Salazar, putting UTPB on top for good.

The Dustdevils didn’t go without their chances in the second half, tallying ten of their 15 total shots in the final 45 minutes.  Jennings and Williams each had opportunities to equalize, but couldn’t find the magic strike.

Head Coach Claudio Arias reflected on the season after the match, “It has been a really tough year for us especially with the amount of injuries we’ve sustained.  We were never able to settle into a consistent line up, but that that didn’t stop our girls from fighting as hard as they could every match and I’m proud of them for their effort.  I believe that good are coming for our program and I’m confident we will be much more successful next season.”

The Dustdevils conclude the season with an overall record of 2-15-1, 1-9 in Heartland Conference play.  Seniors Noemi Salazar (Phoeniz, AZ) and Diana Aguillon (Houston, TX) will be honored during halftime of the men’s season finale versus Newman on Friday, November 4th.
