Casa Tibet was founded by Marco Antonio Karam under the auspices of the 14th Dalai Lama. The Laredo branch is directed by Ninfa Cantu Deandar. It is a non-profit organization where meditation is practiced and the study of Tibetan Buddhism.
The purpose of Casa Tibet is to make aware of the situation Tibet is in right now and to allow a western public to have access to these teachings. Pedro Morales, a member of Casa Tibet mentioned that, “In order to become a member one must take an introductory course and an intermediate course.” Meditation and video teachings are held on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at a member’s house. Members are not required to pay a fee however, donations are welcome and tax deductible. Past events include the Week of Tibet that was held at Texas A&M International University, a Tibetan doctor has come, and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche a Yogi came to Laredo to teach meditation classes. The upcoming events include: a Tibetan doctor that is coming to teach for a week in November; Marco Antonio Karam is coming to teach meditation classes in January, Leandro and Daniela teachers at Casa Tibet Mexico are coming to teach, and Allan Wallace will be coming to give a lecture.
Anyone with a fascination of practicing meditation and studying Tibetan Buddhism is welcome to come and join Casa Tibet. Shekhar Gianchandani, a member of Casa Tibet said, “Mental solace is what you get from meditation mental peace of mind controlling your mind towards positive thoughts instead of negative.” Free meditation classes are being offered at the Bi-National Center this semester from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. every Monday morning.
