University Police offer women’s self defense class

TAMIU police began offering Rape Aggression Defense Systems (R.A.D.), a self-defense course for women, this summer.”Our primary objective is to empower women with options, build self confidence and help with security,” stated Kimberlee Sandoval, Safety Coordinator. Sandoval explained that the 12-hour course offers information regarding safety as well as techniques to protect oneself.”It’s important because we teach women to get empowered and defend themselves in case of an attack,” said Romy Garcia, Police Corporal and R.A.D. instructor.”We need to help more women. I teach it to my wife and kids,” stated Jaime Rios, Police Sergeant and R.A.D. instructor. Rios explained that the course teaches women about awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance. R.A.D. instructors began to offer courses earlier this year and will continue throughout the Fall and Spring semesters. Many women have participated in the course as enrollment increase. Those participating in the program show enthusiasm and determination to complete the program. “It’s a confidence builder and reminder that we have to be advocates of our own safety,” stated a 21-year-old RAD student, who wishes to remain anonymous, “It’s been an eye opening experience.”Another participant, age 27, stated, “It’s empowering as a woman to know that you can defend yourself against an attacker.”The R.A.D. program offers advance, basic, and children’s self-defense courses. Currently, the program is free of charge and open to the Laredo community. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday 1 p.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and four consecutive Fridays only 9 a.m.- noon. Dates vary and arrangements can be made to add courses that suit individual needs. For more information, you can reach Rios at 326-2102 or by e-mail at RAD@tamiu.edu.
