Communication program invites students to open house

Have you ever wanted to anchor the nightly news, D.J. at a radio station, or perhaps handle public relations for your favorite sports team?

All these jobs can be within your reach with a communication degree.

The Department of Language & Literature’s Communication program, in conjunction with Dr. Lynda Brown’s public relations class, is hosting its the first annual “Open House.” Professors, communication students, and guest speakers will be available to inform people about the communication field and the opportunities it offers.

The event will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 20, from 4-7 p.m. at the Student Center ballroom, room SC 206.

It will be open to the public and free of charge. Food, beverages, and give-aways are just a few of the items being provided.

“I am so excited that something like this is taking place. It will be a great opportunity to get informed and network with other communication students,” said Esmeralda Lopez, a junior in the communication program.

Likewise, Alfredo Gonzalez, a freshman in the communication program, is anticipating the event.

“Whoever came up with this idea is a genius!” he said. “This is a great way for me to get familiar with the people in the program and learn about it at the same time. It should be interesting.”

Working as a team, the public relations class is planning, promoting and managing this event.

“It is a great way for students to put what they learn in the classroom to practice. Experiential learning enables the communication students to get a first-hand view of what the PR field is like,” stated Brown, associate professor of Communication and Communication Program coordinator.

Senior Tracie Melendez, one of Brown’s students, agrees.

“It is really a great experience to gain insight into the real world of a public relations campaign,” she said. “With the guidance of Dr. Brown, our class will have gained invaluable instruction and hands-on experience on how to work together to successfully complete a project.”

Other students also expressed their sentiments towards the open house.

“I am sure this is going to be a great experience and that we will all learn a lot more than we would just reading out of a book,” said Luis Saladana, a communications student.
