Zacatecas

The Colonial city of Zacatecas, filled with its beautiful architecture, rich with history, religion, and culture, is located in Mexico’s north-central region, 378 miles northwest of Mexico City, 283 miles southwest of Monterrey, and 197 miles north of Guadalajara. Ana Solis, senior Communication major at TAMIU, had the opportunity to visit Zacatecas on October 9, 2009. It was a trip that left quite an impression on her, if only for a short time. The drive to Zacatecas was tiresome, frustrating, and overwhelming at times. The entire way over, Ana saw nothing but narrow roads and long stretches, making her feel as though there was nothing to look forward to. Then, right before her eyes, she saw a marvelous city that surprised her and put a smile on her face. “I didn’t feel like I was in Mexico, but more like colonial Mexico that captured the essence and beauty of what Mexico is,” said Solis. “One of the nice things that made Zacatecas so interesting is that people have an appreciation for the city. The city is great for tourists, especially people who want to shop,” said Solis. You can explore the city’s urban design and countless cultural designs all on foot. You also have the option of viewing the beautiful designs from a suspended cable car that goes across the city. The cable car even runs through the famous Cerro de la Bufa, a hill where you can find countless beautiful historical attractions. “Cerro de la Bufa was one of my favorite places to visit. It is so lively and unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” said Solis. Zacatecas’ traditional food was something that also caught Ana’s attention. “The food is authentic and captures every flavor of Mexico from dishes like pozole, gorditas, caldo de res, enchiladas, flautas, and mole,” said Solis. The one thing that Solis noticed was how difficult it was to find tacos in this city. “I guess I was used to going to Nuevo Laredo and finding a taco stand on every corner, but this was not the case in Zacatecas. In fact, I had to walk several miles before I found a taco stand. Even then, it didn’t taste the same. Tacos aren’t very popular in Zacatecas,” said Solis. You really don’t know the true beauty of Mexico until you visit one the many gems that the country has to offer. Zacatecas truly is one of Mexico’s many hidden treasures. It is a fascinating city with something to offer to peak anyone’s interests. Whether you enjoy outdoor scenery, breathtaking architecture, exploring new cultures, or tasting new foods, Zacatecas is a city that is sure to satisfy your adventurous side.
