On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall set the evening for enchantment, elegance, and sophistication. The concert was hosted by the Mexican Consulate in Laredo, Gateway Rotary Club, Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Instituto Cultural Mexico Laredo. The Cuarteto included Balbi Cotter on Violin I, Viktoria Horti on Violin II, Matthew Schubring on Viola, and Adolfo Ramos on Violoncello. Members of the Cuarteto often participate as soloists for the most influential and well known orchestras of Mexico and have performed in both national and international locations. They performed several pieces from different composers across the world such as Franz Josef Haydn, Joaquin Turina, and Antonin Dvorak. The majestic evening allowed listeners to appreciate the music that captivated every emotion and desire. Connie Pena, TAMIU alumni, enjoyed the evening that simply took her breath away. “I was simply in awe from beginning to end. It felt as if they were telling a story which had a beginning, middle, and an end. Every piece was moving. I could not have been more impressed.” Josefina Gutierrez, a Communication student at TAMIU, also enjoyed the evening. “It is a great opportunity that we have to see performances like these. They help enrich our musical tastes and provide some relaxation at the same time,” she said. Charlie Cantu, a Political Science major at TAMIU, said, “I enjoyed the program very much. I think TAMIU should bring more music oriented programs to our campus to help our minds gain knowledge through music.” Melissa Rios, a psychology major at TAMIU was deeply moved as well. “The music itself took me to a world filled with joy and wonderment,” said Rios. As the quartet performed pieces such as Allegro moderate and Lento, members of the audience were mesmerized as the music took them through a musical journey. Proceeds of the event went to help benefit Laredo Gateway Rotary Club and the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra. Tickets were $10 dollars for the general public and free for students with a proper ID.
