Best and worst of Laredo nightlife

One thing college kids are always looking for is cheap alcohol. “My absolute favorite place to buy cheap drinks would have to be Average Joe’s Happy Hour between 5-7 p.m.,” said English major Claire Duran.Senior communication major Yanira Resendez agrees with Duran. She cites the $1 dollar “you-call-it” special as the main reason. However, Duran points out that not all cheap places are worth the hype. “Oasis’s drinks are cheap and all from 3-7 p.m.,” says Duran, “but their watered-down margaritas give me a headache!”Rumors Country Bar and patio was also amongst the places listed as a cheap place for a drink. Others, however, prefer a place where they could let go of inhibitions and take to the dance floor. “The best place to dance? On top of tables!” jokes Resendez. “I like F-bar because I have my hip-hop side and then my house music,” she added.Communications major Alfredo Gonzalez’s favorite place to dance is Scandals Bar in downtown Laredo. Senior criminal justice major Elizabeth Ortiz argues that anywhere is a good place to dance, pending availability of space. “That’s my biggest complaint: a ‘club’ doesn’t have enough space. It’s too crowded,” said Ortiz. Still, Laredo has more to offer, like an upcoming rock scene. Places like Average Joe’s and Old No. 2 are Resendez and Gonzalez’s favorites for rock.”It may be loud and crowded, but it’s a good place to spend time with friends and listen to some good rock music,” said Resendez. Duran, however, believes that TKO Sports Bar and Grill is the best place for rock music. When asked about her favorite rock place, sophomore criminal justice major Belinda Pedroza responded “Not anywhere in Laredo!”And, of course, there’s always the college staple: house parties. “They’re good! I love them!” said Ortiz. Resendez shared a different sentiment: “it’s not my cup of tea. I think that when you turn 21, you’re not into house parties anymore but the after parties.” Gonzalez said he only went to house parties when he was “broke.”The most popular place amongst those interviewed was F-bar. Duran, Resendez, and Ortiz cited it as their favorite place. Palms and Club Love were also mentioned. Knowing where not to go is perhaps even more important than knowing where to go.Gonzalez, Duran, Resendez, and an anonymous source cited Club Tonic as the worst place to go. “I don’t know about the new place, but when I went to the one on the strip, I hated it. Then, when it moved to where Grahams used to be, [it got] even worse,” said Resendez. There’s a general consensus about the best and worst places to go in Laredo amongst the interviewed. For a fun clubbing experience, F-bar, Club Love, and Palms are good. Average Joe’s, TKO and Old No. 2 are the spots for rock and cheap liquor. Be wary of Tonic.
