Editor’s note: The following is a letter addressed to the student body by new Student Government Association President Christine A. Cortez.
Hello everyone!
My name is Christine A. Cortez, and I am your Student Government Association President (SGA).
Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every single one of you for choosing Texas A&M International University in assisting you in accomplishing your dreams. I also congratulate every one of you for deciding to advance your education because only through education, may we achieve our fullest potential.
As a fellow student, I cannot stress enough the importance of getting involved on campus. The only way to enhance your academic and social experience in college is by getting involved. One way I chose to become active was joining SGA. This prestigious organization serves as a forum for students to express their concerns and/or opinions. Its purpose is to improve your student life by working diligently to ensure your concerns are handled appropriately. I highly encourage everyone to voice his or her concerns or ideas to us because whether it be on a one-to-one basis or through our SGA senate meetings, your voice is important to us! This enables us to be up-to-date with current student issues; otherwise, we’d only be speaking on behalf of a select few.
This year we have several new and exciting changes. Because students are the foundation of all our goals, one of SGA’s primary objectives this year is to build school pride and establish traditions. Accordingly, we plan on collaborating a lot more with various student organizations to bring you exciting events. We are also working on creating a Freshman Representative Council. Because our freshmen are coming into TAMIU with new and fresh ideas, we plan to utilize their enthusiasm by having them assist SGA in developing and creating traditions. The Freshmen Representative Council will allow us to help build some of the leaders of tomorrow. Along with student affairs, the SGA also works on several community service projects throughout the year, as well as discovering different ways to conserve our environment. These are just a few of the many ways we are planning for the future. Most importantly, we plan on empowering students by keeping you informed of any important changes. Because we are planning to increase visibility, tremendously, expect SGA members to be highly visible this year
However, please remember-without your voice, we are powerless, so get involved! Know your representatives! We have several senators and justices representing each college. If you’d like more information, please feel free to email me at christinerocks@dusty.tamiu.edu.
We are also currently looking for several members to help us realize our goals. If you are interested in creating history and helping students, please stop by SC 229. Senator meetings are open to the entire student body and are held on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm in the Student Center, room 120. On behalf of SGA, we welcome some of you to TAMIU and welcome some of you back. We look forward to working for you!
“SGA cannot be explained, only experienced.”
