Study abroad helps create global citizens

On Feb. 5, flags from Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, and Taiwan filled the TAMIU Student Center Rotunda; the décor was all part of the Study Abroad Festival.

Amongst the collection of flags, stories, and plush Shakespeare dolls, stood an array of booths advocating TAMIU’s various study abroad programs.

Julie Van Vechten Smith, Director of Customized Programs for Academic Programs International (API), was on hand to help encourage students to pursue a study abroad program. She believes that study abroad programs help students in both academics and future career paths.

“API’s goal is to support and encourage [students’] global learning,” said Van Vechten Smith. “The world is very globalized; employers are looking for global citizens.” Studying abroad, besides being a way for students to become more aware of life outside Laredo, also gives students a sense of personal fulfillment.

“It was the single best experience of my life so far,” said Esmeralda Lopez, a senior communications major.

One of many manning the Study in Leeds, England booth, graduate student Erica Matos spent five weeks in England studying English National identity last summer. Matos claimed the friendships that were built around the experience were the best part. She also noted that, while the United States and England share a language, it’s a big departure from what one is used to.

“It’s interesting because it’s an English speaking culture; you don’t expect it to be so different,” said Matos.

Students, however, raised a couple of concerns, mostly having to do with money and GPA.

Jorge Martinez, a senior English major, voiced concerns over his GPA and said, “money was definitely a concern.”

However, financial assistance is plentiful. Scholarships are available through the Office of International Education (OIE) located on the third floor of Pelegrino Hall.

Some students, however, still have not hopped on the bandwagon.

“I haven’t thought about it, but it’s interesting,” said senior Hispanic studies major Sandra Peña.

“Take advantage of the opportunity while you’re students,” Van Vechten Smith said in reference to students like Peña.
