Officials Inaugurate USC

On Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, Texas A&M International University newest building, the University Success Center (USC) held its dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony. The event took place inside the USC at 2 p.m.. The ceremony was organized by Candy Hein, VP for Institutional Advancement as well as President Dr. Ray Keck and the Executive Council.

The ceremony began with a welcome by Dr. Keck, followed by remarks

and introduction of Senator Judith Zaffirini by Chancellor of Texas A&M University System, Dr. Michael D. McKinney. Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst was then introduced by Senator Zaffirini.

The USC cost a total of 25 million dollars which was made possible with special funding

begun by Senator Zaffirini during the 2007 legislative session. Two years ago, TAMIU held the ground breaking ceremony for the USC and once again, we celebrate the buildings release to the TAMIU student body.

When asked why the building was constructed, Hein stated, “The purpose

of the building is to have a one stop shop.” Hein continued, “They’ll be able to go in

and ask about the University, register, get admitted, find out about financial aid, and pay

their fees”. The building was also constructed to help raise the retention rate at

TAMIU.

When asked, as a student what had been expected of the inauguration of the USC building, Karla Olmos, a Communication major, said, “I wasn’t expecting so many people but it’s great that so many people turned out because it is a new addition to TAMIU.” Olmos went on to say, “Yes, it is more accommodating to students needs, it is a place where you can come and get everything done in one building.”
