Mariachi performs at Center for the Arts gathering

The university’s Mariachi Internacional was among the entertainment at April 13’s “Friday Happening” at the Laredo Center for the Arts.

The event served as the opening reception for artists displaying work at the center during April.

The mariachis performed in the front and back galleries, and eventually the patio, where a representative of the Union Pacific Railroad presented a $5,000 check to the center for its 15th Annual International Juried Show later this year.

Other entertainment was provided by VOZ poets, also on the patio.

The event featured four artists at its monthly reception:

* Whimsical paintings of women in situations they face in daily life, by Judi Krew in the Goodman Gallery,

* Paintings of the Mexican Revolution by Arturo Casarin Alcivar in the Laredo Art League Gallery. His show, titled “Imagenes de la Revolucion Mexicana,” were of images of peasants, guerillas and soldiers, in sepia tones.

* Charcoal drawings and mezzotint prints of plants and foilage by Lari R. Gibbons in the Goodman Gallery and

* Photography by Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts journalism students in their 11th annual show, also in the Goodman Gallery. Photos were taken with 35mm cameras using black-and-white film as well as color images taken with digital cameras.

A center official estimated attendance at 250 guests.
