Generation Chalk Art

Art is an entity that revolutionizes generation after generation and here at Texas A&M International University adapting to the changes is no problem.  Art Ink is an art organization here at TAMIU whose mission is to promote art amongst the university and the community and this time around they would take art to a whole new meaning.  Teresita De La Torre, the president of the organization, reminisced on her study abroad in the beautiful Italy and recalled the times she would walk to school and see people painting classical art works directly on the streets of Italy.  “I would go to school and they would be starting and then I would get out of school and the work was almost done, sometimes working until very late at night,” said De La Torre.  She discovered that innovative way of art and would eventually be applied to TAMIU’s Art Ink.

TAMIU Art Ink first attempted to compose this art at a previous event but it turned out they were prohibited from doing so on school grounds because it was considered vandalism.  So they found an alternative for which they’d still abide by the rules of the campus, but at the same time they’d be happily showcasing their artwork.  They sketched their artwork on panels.

On October 6th, 2011, between Pellegrino and Canseco Hall, the Art Ink of TAMIU hosted the Chalk Art where students and staff were able to witness the talents of the art students while they cautiously but surely sketched their art on the panels.  “A combination of fine art and street art,” said Santos Polendo, Vice President of Art Ink, called it.  The art students reproduced their own versions of famous paintings such as The Birth of Venus and Pablo Picasso’s, The Kiss, using various pastel colors.

“We want to do this not only to show our talent, but also so people can learn a little bit about art,” concluded De La Torre.  It was a great observing way for all.  “I’d like to see it around campus, I mean I can’t do it myself but it be nice to see,” said student bystander Victor Flores.  Who knew art and the ground could ever look so artistic, but with the talent of De La Torre, Polendo, and the rest of Art Ink, creative chalk art is what you’ll get.
