March 1 was the start of the fierce two-week Dustdevil Boot Camp hosted by Strength and Condition Specialist Aaron Garza of Texas A&M International University Wellness and Recreational Center (REC) Sports.
The boot camp was held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for two weeks from 8:30-9:30 a.m. outside of the REC.
As the flyer explains, Dustdevil Boot Camp is an intense workout combining strength conditioning, resistance and cardiovascular training. It also involves a teamwork environment and motivational push that should challenges individuals.
The workout begins with five to eight minute static stretching and continues with an eight circuit exercise. The first day consisted of push-ups, side straddle hops, crunches, mountain climbers, six-count body builders, flutter kicks, front lunges, and a ten minute run.
“This workout is designed in order for you to use your own body as weight. It’s very up tempo and gets your heart rate up,” explained Garza. “It is extremely important that people come prepared for the workout with comfortable running shoes, clothes, and plenty of drinking water.”
The target audience for the boot camp was any motivated individual, willing to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually, the flyer continues.
For those expecting immediate results, fitness assessments can be completed, if asked. The fitness assessment will inform participants of their current weight, measurements, body fat percentage, and body mass index. This assessment will allow participants to know whether they lost inches, lost weight, or gained muscle in the two week process.
“Although the boot camp was a great two week sculpting program, we only had a turnout of about eight people. I think the $20 registration fee scared everyone off, so the next time I host one, the fee will definitely be waived,” Garza said.
The next boot camp will begin Monday, April 12. According to Garza, those who are interested and ready for a challenge can sign a free waiver at the REC.
“Do not be intimidated by the workouts. This camp challenges you in every way possible and it’s all about the effort,” commented Garza.
Upcoming events at REC Sports include: Pull-Up Competition, Bench Press Max/Max Reps Competition, Strongman Competition, and the Ironman Competition.
