Rock lyrics mixed with freestyle rap are the trademark of E!ite, a.k.a. Chris Davila, a university student majoring in Finance. While pursuing his passion, Davila, 22, not only creates a different style of rap but also inspires his listeners through his lyrics.”E!ite is the manifestation of the voice inside your head, screaming at inconsistencies, injustices and ignorance,” said the up-and-coming rapper. “It is the actions you wish you could take to make things right. It is blind justice speaking for the sake of not one, but all.”He explained some of his early influences came from family as well as his surroundings.”I’ve been doing it [performing] since I was little. I was born in Dallas, so half of my life I listened to rap and hip hop because my cousin was a DJ. When I moved to Laredo, I started listening to rock,” E!ite said. On Sept. 28, 2008, he competed with other local rappers in “America’s Next Rapper” and placed first. He has been putting lyrics and songs together since August, along with his cousin, Hector Rosas, who has recorded most of his music. His first CD, Damn Nation, was finally released on Oct. 2, 2008 at Average Joes with a jaw-dropping performance. Blasting off the night was E!ite’s former band, Fallen on September (FO9). Playing a few of their original songs, FO9 pumped up the crowd. E!ite was then asked to go on stage and play the bongos for an acoustic song. Close to midnight, E!ite finally emerged for his solo performance, and several fans later expressed their amazement at his show. “I was impressed with his ability to rap and give out a good performance. The crowd was really into it, and I would love to see him succeed,” says Esmeralda Lopez, a friend and audience member. “He was great. He brought a lot of energy and really got the crowd going towards the end. It was what I expected, plus a whole lot more,” agreed Rudy Murillo.E!ite also felt pleased with hisperformance.”I thought it was one of my best, and I had a great response from the crowd,” he said. E!ite also performed at Hoops Madness on Oct. 18 and Rock the Vote on Oct. 23 (Read more in the next issue!).
