College Night

On Wednesday, October 27, Texas A&M International University held their annual College Night at the Student Center Ballroom. The event was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m, but students and parents were already gathered before at the Student Center.

College Night is a way for juniors and seniors from high school to gather together and have the opportunity to analyze what each university in Texas has to offer. Among these offerings include housing, academic programs, and financial aid. The event has been hosted at TAMIU ever since the Student Center opened its doors back in 2002.

“It is the first and only time during the year that the students in Laredo get the opportunity to see that many universities, colleges, and institutions here in the city,¨ stated Juan Gilberto Garcia Jr., Director of Office Recruitment and School Relations.

Various high schools along with their counselors held several event sign in sheet for their students. Some high schools, such as United High School, Alexander High, and United South were raffling away scholarships as an initiative to have their students attend the event. United High raffled three $100 book scholarships, Alexander High raffled one $200 dollar regular scholarship, and United South had 2 $100 dollar scholarships.  Other schools participating in the event were St. Augustine High School, Bruni High School, L.B. Johnson High School, Cigarroa High School, Martin High School, Nixon High School, Early College High School, and Gateway Academy.

In the Student Ballroom, various universities from Texas had their tables set with plenty of information for the students. The participating universities included the Art Institute of San Antonio, Huston -Tillotson University, Laredo Community College, Our Lady If The Lake University, Sam Houston State University, Schreiner University, St. Edward´s University, St. Mary´s University, Tarleton State University, Texas A&M International University, Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi and College Station, Texas A&M University Kingsville, Texas State University, Texas Women´s University, The University of Houston, The University of Houston at Victoria, TX., The University of The Incarnate Word, The University of North Texas, The University of Texas – Permian Basin, The University of Texas Health Science Center Regional Campus, Tufts University, West Texas A&M University, and ITT Technical Institute.

During the spring semester, a graduate college fair is organized by the Office of Career Services, which allows current Dustdevils to seek the opportunities toward pursing a master´s degree.

For students who are interested in attending TAMIU, college representatives visit local high schools twice a week, or visit the University Success Center, room 130, Mondays and Tuesdays 8 a.m-5 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays 8 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
