Students hustle for Haiti Relief

In lieu of Student Government Awareness week, SGA dedicated several days to spotlight student Haiti Relief efforts.

During Tuesday’s Hotdogs for Haiti event, SGA members set up tables during lunch hours, and for each donation, regardless the amount, students were given a hotdog. The hotdogs had been provided by Aramark, free of charge. The three hour event raised $220 dollars.

SGA members volunteered their time going door to door at the Residential Learning Community on campus, asking for spare change, during Wednesday’s Dorm Donation Drive. The drive resulted in almost $250 in monetary donations.

According to SGA Senator and Haiti Relief Organizer, Mark Garner, one resident proceeded to, literally, empty out his own piggy bank. Donations received included clothing, blankets, along with a few miscellaneous items.

“I am extremely proud! A huge thank you to Aramark and the TAMIU Housing Staff for being so generous with such short notice,” said Garner. “I know for a fact that if Laredo were to experience a natural disaster on such a tremendous level, we would all appreciate it if others gave their time and thoughts to help in any way that they can.”

For those still wishing to donate, plastic bins are currently located at Dusty’s Diner, Food Court, TAMIU Bookstore, Pizzeria, and Starbucks.

SGA hopes to match the total amount of donations received.
