TAMIU Spring Concert
On Wednesday April 4, 2012, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) hosted their annual Spring concert at the Center for the Fine & Performing Arts Recital Hall. The Spring concert was free and open to the public and consisted of the TAMIU Chamber singers, the Laredo Community College (LCC) Choir, and the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo.
During the first half of the concert, the TAMIU Chamber singers and the LCC Choir performed selections from Liebeslieder Walzer Opus 52 by Johannes Brahms. This was followed by two Madrigals, one by Thomas Morley titled My Bonny Lass She Smileth, and P.D.Q Bach titled My Bonny lass She Smelleth. During the performance of P.D.Q My Bonny Lass She Smileth, Ricardo Holguin, one of the members of the TAMIU Chamber singers, had an improvisation solo. It took the audience by surprise hearing Holguin's voice hit such high notes that seemed to echo all the way into the parking lot.
The audience did not know his solo was improvisation and The Bridge had a chance to talk to Holguin after the concert to ask him about his solo. Holguin said, "It was all improv, just making it up as I went." Their final performances before the intermission consisted of three songs, Fields of Gold by Sting, a Scottish Traditional song titled Loch Lomond, and Alma Llanera by Pedro Gutierrez. After the intermission, the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo began performing selections from Symphony in C Major, conducted by Brendan Townsend. The musical talent of the Chamber Orchestra captivated the audience with their classic melodies.
The Spring Concert is a great way to welcome the time of season and see the local musical talent Laredo has to offer. Being able to see Laredo's youth play pieces of musical art is proud sight of anyone who calls this city home. If you have not heard the TAMIU Chamber Singers, LCC Choir, or Chamber Orchestra mark your calendar for next year when the flowers bloom and their classical music fills the night air.
