Mother's Day
A Day to Celebrate Mom
Mother's Day is right around the corner and is hastily making its way toward us. Mother's Day is a day we take to appreciate the one we call mom. Our mothers work very hard to support us and keep us going in this world. It does not matter how old you get or how independent you are, you cannot deny the fact that you need your mommy every once in a while, and she is always there to help. So on this special day, how will you thank your mother for all that she's done for you? While candies, gifts, clothing, and various gifts are great ideas to give your mother on her special day, how will you show her your appreciation? So where did this great idea to honor mothers come from?
According to mothersdaycentral.com, Mother's day did not start in the board room of the Hallmark Greeting Card Company, but began several thousand years ago. While there is no exact date, it can be seen from several different cultures involving the need to honor one or more goddesses in appreciation. The usual portrayals of the goddesses were maternal. The maternal images inspired adoration for divine mothers as well as mortal mothers. The tradition is still with us today. To honor our mothers for carrying us in their womb and giving birth to us and tending to our every need even into adulthood, we are to take one day out of the year to celebrate them. In the United States, however, the holiday of Mother's Day did not begin until the year 1914 after a four year campaign done by Anna M. Jarvis. However, she did not want it to become a commercial holiday, her efforts proved fruitless. Today, it is widely commercialized and honed by the greeting card industry as well as other industries. However, this does seem to be such a fault anymore. Our country is a capitalist country and thrives on the power of commercialism. Yet, does it really matter how you honor your mother as long as you are able to do it?
Our mothers are an important part of our lives and our societies. Mothers are the driving forces behind every single one of us. A maternal bond between one person to another is something that motivates us to achieve well in life. We must acknowledge the fact that our mothers take care of us despite our age. A mother's love is an unconditional one. She was always there to cheer for us at an event. She was always there when you were hurt or sick. She was always quick to defend, when we needed defending. She was there to help pick up the pieces after you've broken down. She will always be there no matter what age, no matter how big the problem is, and no matter how angry you get with her. She will never leave you or desert you. We love our mothers and we must thank them every day. However, on Mother's Day, May 8, 2011, we must take the entire day to thank her even more! You can do it with gifts, candies, jewelry, or clothing, but if you give them to her with such admiration and pride that she is your mother. You can be sure that she will be grateful to have you as her son or daughter.
