Breaking Barriers at "Stop the Stigma"

Students gathered outside March 25 at the Student Center Patio where Texas A&M International University Counseling and Disabilities Services and Student Government geared up for "Stomp the Stigma". The event sought to break stigmas faced by college students over issues such as depression and suicide. Cynthia Garces, Disabilities Coordinator was at the event to describe the goal of "Stomp the Stigma".
"Basically, "Stomp the Stigma" is the removal of the barrier for seeking help. There are a lot of students here who are going through a lot of stress, students that have to deal with test anxiety, and also students dealing with disabilities. We're passing the message around that it's ok to ask for help when needed."
Performances during the event included music from the band Discruña, Thomas Pressley-Williams who rapped, and TAMIU Rec Sports Dance Hall.
Councilors and student workers were on-site to pass out flyers, stress balls, and pamphlets with useful information over handling stress and coping with anxiety. Also given to the first 200 students was a free t-shirt.  Delicious sandwiches and fruit were also available to students who attended.
Student senator Cynthia Gallardo-Limón described the need for awareness of the services provided by the Counseling and Disabilities center.
"I believe that students should be more aware of the services offered at TAMIU, like our disabilities services and counseling, because these services are free. They will, for the most part help students enhance their college experience, knowing that there is somebody here that can assist them."
Students, such as Daisy Moore, a sophomore education major enjoyed experience and the efforts made by the organizations that participated at "Stomp the Stigma".
"The food, music, and free stuff definitely gets students attention and will encourage them to stop by. It definitely encourages students to stop by the counseling center when they just want to talk or are stressed out."
As summarized by Graces, the message given to students throughout the event was clear, "Don't be shy, don't be scared, come into our office, everyone is welcome."
The Student Counseling and Disabilities Services is open from 8 a.m to 5 p.m, Monday thru Friday at the first floor of the Student Center room 124.
