Panich Takes Third at LeTourneau Spring Classic
Fourth Top Five Finish of the Season
April 3, 2012
LONGVIEW - Tammy Panich led the Texas A&M International University women's golf team at the LeTourneau Spring Classic, shooting a two round total of 153 to take third place, her fourth top five finish of the season.
After an opening round 74, the junior from Glendale, California turned in a five-over 79 in the final round finishing four shots behind tournament winner Maraea Durie from Tyler Junior College.
"Tammy's positioning in the fairways and on the greens just wasn't as ideal as usual for her game, which gave her some longer putts and tougher lies than yesterday," said Head Coach Becca Mayeux. "She had some difficult second shots and the pin placement was a bit more challenging which resulted in fewer pars."
As a team the Dustdevils shot 340 on day two of the tournament for a total of 696, good for sixth place. Freshman Abigail Palacios matched her lowest round of the season with an 82, finishing in 28th place. Karina DeAnda carded her lowest score of the season with an 88 finishing in a tie for 29th, Victoria Young shaved six strokes off her opening round 97 for a final round 91 and Yesenia Ramirez rounded out the TAMIU field with a 106.
"I'm really excited for the way the girls played today," said Coach Mayeux. "Abby put herself in a good place mentally to break back into the 80's which is what we wanted from her all season. Karina was incredible with her course management and had the breakthrough we've been waiting for. This was a great day and we are eager to continue this momentum into the conference tournament.
The girls will concluded the 2011-12 season on April 16-17, heading to Fort-Smith Arkansas for the Heartland Conference Tournament.
