World Series Game 1
Once again, it is that time of year! Major League Baseball's World Series began on Oct. 24, 2012. American League champions, Detroit Tigers, faced the National League champions, San Francisco Giants. The best-of-seven playoff matchup would begin in San Francisco as Giants' starter Barry Zito would take on Justin Verlander and the Tigers.
Game 1 was all Giants as they managed to get 5 runs off of Tigers' ace, Justin Verlander. Verlander lasted just 4 innings. Giants' third basemen, Pablo Sandoval had a historic night as he hit 3 homeruns. Sandoval tied a postseason record and joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols as the only players to hit 3 homeruns in a World Series game.
Giants' starter, Barry Zito was much more effective than Verlander, giving up only 1 run in 5 2/3 innings. Zito looked like a man on a mission the whole postseason in 2012. In 2010, he was left out of the postseason roster when the Giants would go on to win the World Series. He had to take advantage of playing in the World Series and show what he was made of.
Tim Lincecum and the bullpen would come in and finish the game as the Giants took game 1 with a final score of 8 to 3. Barry Zito would earn the win, while Verlander took the loss.
