A Class Taught by Legends
On January 31, 2012 the new Spanish Dance Technique class began. It is the first time ever that Texas A&M International University offers a Spanish Dance Technique course, there are no required prerequisites and experience is not required. The classes began promptly at 7:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts building in room 122.
The Spanish Dance Technique class was instructed by one of Laredo's most beloved dancer, and Legend, Altagracia Azios-García and by our own Dr. Minita Ramirez Vice president of Student Success. Azios Garcia explained that the class should not be defined as "flamenco" only. Azios-Garcia commented that the Spanish dance is a "dying art" and that she wishes to revive it in Laredo with the help of her class. She explained that students can expect to learn various dances from different regions of Spain. Azios-Garcia has been dancing and teaching for more than 43 years, 17 years ago she decided to retire but due to local demand and her passion for the art dancing decided to start teaching again. Altagracia also comment that student will not regret taking this course because they will not only learn to dance, but also get a history lesson and a great work out.
Student anxiously waited for class to begin as some were eager to learn new dance techniques and to reunite with old friends and relive great times. But the class offers more than what it advertises since most of the people who register for the course are excellent veteran dancers. Beginners have the opportunity to learn with them and from them. Everyone in the class is treated equally and everyone helps out one another no matter how lost you may be. The course is packed with beautiful music that will allow students not only to learn to play the castanets but also work on elaborate beautiful zapateado (footwork) and elegant brazeo (arm movements).
Ramirez thanked the Office of Continuing Education because they were of great help into the creation of the course. Ramirez also took time to explain that the course has a cost of $150 per student and that for non-students and staff, a parking permit ($18) will be required. The class will take place every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. Ramirez also added that she wished more students would join so that they get to learn the beauty of Spanish dance while getting to help out students, since all the funds that course collect will go towards student scholarships.
