The 90s Take Over the Fashion World
As the colder temperatures have finally become a thing of the past, it's safe to say that the time has come to bust out those strappy sandals and denim cut-offs that have been hiding in the back of our closets. Spring is definitely a season of new beginnings; from the semester nearly being over to the almost 180 degree turn the weather has taken, it's no surprise that the fashion world has followed suit. This season, rather than showcasing the usual warm weather staples, designers like Isabel Marant and Alexander Wang are embracing these changes in the form of a newly reinvented 90s statement piece: slip-on sandals.
While images of antiquated tourists sporting Birkenstock sandals might first come to mind, this infamous shoe has experienced a serious style upgrade. From inspirational French fashion blogs to off-duty models waltzing down the streets of New York City, it's quite obvious that the slip-on sandal has taken the sartorial world by storm. If you find yourself feeling somewhat weary as to how to embrace this spring trend, fear no more, for mastering the art of the slip-on sandal is all about ease. Next time you find yourself sporting your usual combo of jeans and a t-shirt, mix it up a little by adding a pair of slip-ons. From your usual day dresses to high-waisted denim shorts, a pair of these sandals will definitely add an air of Parisian chic to any ensemble.
Other than a turn in the more comfortable direction, another trend taking over fashion's elite is pastel hues. From pale blue nails to lilac shift dresses, embracing this ever so popular color craze is as simple as a few coats of nail polish. There are a variety of ways to incorporate this trend into your everyday looks, but if you find yourself feeling somewhat questionable about color choices, start small. Consider purchasing a pair of basic ballet flats in a pastel hue, such as a soft pink. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, opt for a a head-to-toe pastel look. This can be mastered with a statement making skater dress or with a pencil skirt and matching crop top. After a winter filled with darker hues, pastels provide the perfect transition into spring.
And now for a staple that's not for the faint of heart: the infamous "mom" jean. Despite their name, high-waisted denim jeans are all the rage this season. Featuring a substantial high rise and tapered leg, sporting this trend is all about proportions. The easiest way to incorporate this piece into your daily ensemble is by practicing the art of minimalism, meaning in the case of the "mom" jean, less is always more! If you find yourself somewhat intimidated by this trend, easy does it. When paired with a simple, solid cropped top, these jeans become the focal point of your look, adding a fresh splash of spring spirit into your daily looks.
The trends of spring/summer 2014 are all about taking risks; the next time you find yourself stressing over what to wear, toss those hesitations aside and test out one of the new 90s inspired pieces of the season.
