New pre-med advisor has big plans for upcoming semester
The College of Arts and Sciences Biology department is proud to introduce Dr. Kameron Jorgensen as the new pre-med advisor. With her charismatic approach and her knowledge of pre-medical qualifications and standards, Dr. Jorgensen is excelling in her new position. With a hopeful mindset for the future of pre-med students, Dr. Jorgensen was extremely excited to share her plans and goals for this upcoming school year.
Dr. Jorgensen is in her third year as a chemistry instructor at Texas A&M International University. She began as a lab instructor for General Chemistry courses, and students were always drawn by her approachable nature. Dr. Jorgensen received her PhD from the University of North Texas in, Denton Texas where she resided for 5 years before coming to Laredo. After her first year as a chemistry instructor, Dr. Jorgensen received the 10 year track position. Aside from being a professor, Dr.Jorgensen conducts her yearly research, she is a member of various campus organizations, and she runs the Chemistry Club.
After the last pre-med advisor, Dr. Kellogg, left state, the position became vacant. However, before leaving she highly recommended that Dr.Jorgensen fill her place. Dr. Jorgensen was offered the position and she gladly accepted. She strongly believes she is the adequate person for the position since she was a pre-med student in undergrad school before becoming a Chemistry major. She is familiar with the process of applying to medical school, and she has first hand experience with the rigorous work input.”I like talking to students, and I like biology students, I’m just here to help them with anything they need,” explains Dr. Jorgensen.
Dr. Jorgensen attended many workshops and meetings this past summer to become acquainted with all the new requirements and expectations for pre-med students. She was part of a JAMP Director meeting that was held in San Antonio where she was able to learn all about the upcoming changes to the MCAT. “Being a pre-med advisor is very time consuming, there’s a lot of students who want to be pre-med and wo are pre-med, and so I have students in my office practically everyday, which is very nice,” shares Dr. Jorgensen about her experience as a new advisor among students.
This semester has been a great success for her and her students. They’ve accomplished many things, and everyone is having a wonderful time working with each other. Dr. Jorgensen advises all students who are interested in being pre-med to join the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). “Join any club and organization you can! Talk to your peers, talk to your professors, talk to me! Don’t feel afraid to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to come visit me at my office,” advises Dr. Jorgensen.
Dr. Jorgensen could not stress that fact that she is beyond excited to continue working with students who are looking to pursue a career in the medical field. She maintains constant contact with all her students via email to ensure that they remain on track with all the changes and upcoming events. “There are a lot of workshops and events awaiting the students next semester. Im looking forward to all the opportunities they will have to enrich their knowledge and expand their possibilities,” expressed Dr. Jorgensen.
Being a pre-med student is hard work. There are so many requirements, there are so many decisions to make. It can all become extremely overwhelming. But students should know that they are not alone. TAMIU continues to excel in their pre-medical program, and will continue to strive to make further advancements in the field with the aid of all professors and staff, especially Dr. Jorgensen, whom expects for greater things to come in the near future.
You can visit Dr. Jorgensen during her office hours in LBV room 307. You can also contact her via phone or email at (956) 326 3568 and kameron.jorgensen@tamiu.edu
