Message to TAMIU: Wake Up!

By Mario Cavazos
On November 4, 2009

The Bridge is a Texas A & M International University newspaper publication that talks about what's going on campus and caters the interests of students who want to read on issues like politics, sports, movies, food, etc. There are students in TAMIU who have expressed their views on what they would like to see on the newspaper and campus in the foreseeable future. TAMIU students, now more than ever, need to step up, take action and fight for the cause of bringing our nation together due to issues like the economic recession. First, it starts with a community. Paul Juarez, a sophomore Communications major at TAMIU, is interested in establishing coalitions and clubs that bring students together.

"It starts with a sense of community. TAMIU can help make a difference by promoting awareness through various political debates, groups, and meetings. The Bridge can also write articles that students can read on issues like global warming and foreign relations so that students can be informed on what is going on in their country," said Ramirez.

Jessica Cavazos, a Communications major at TAMIU, feels that sometimes students get side tracked and talk about topics that overshadow issues that affect the nation and world as a whole.

"The best thing a student at TAMIU can do is to stand up for what they believe. I know we go off track and talk about things that matter to us like parties, Greek life, and who's dating who. Promoting national and global awareness can place the university on the map," said Cavazos.

There are students like Paul and Jessica who feel that by discussing issues on matters like education, unemployment, and healthcare can create knowledge and awareness.

Knowledge is power. TAMIU needs to be on the cutting edge and by creating political groups like TAMIU College Republicans would raise some interesting debates between TAMIU Democrats and Republicans.

Josefina Gutierrez, another Communications major at TAMIU, is a strong advocate for issues that have a profound impact and that affect future generations.

"Students on campus need to open their minds and hearts and hopefully have a sense of understanding of what kind of world we are living in," said Gutierrez.

More students like Josefina are expressing their views and desires for more open discussions on issues that affect us so that students can learn to become leaders of tomorrow. Action speaks louder than words. It's becoming more apparent how important it is for students to learn what is going on with today's chaotic world. Students at TAMIU should begin to take initial steps at making the university stronger than ever before.

A university whose interests include what's best for the students, community, and country speaks high in volume.

It gives the university character and strength and demonstrates an interest in political issues that affect each and every one of us. "We need to build more coalitions on campus to promote community and global awareness. The time for action begins right now," added Ramirez.
