October is a month that is generally linked to Halloween. Everyone thinks of costumes, haunted houses, and scary movies. Well, there is another thing that is popular in October, and it is pink.

Breast cancer awareness takes place in the month of October, and one is bound to see a lot of pink things going around. Pink ribbons, pink t-shirts, pink headbands, and even pink contact lens cases! You name it, and it's pink. Stores everywhere commit themselves to selling products that raise money for breast cancer awareness. It is an important issue that affects women all over the world, and it is important that it gets heard.

So, what is TAMIU doing to raise awareness on this issue?

The biggest event that raised breast cancer awareness was the Dig Pink Night at the TAMIU women's volleyball game. The game was a "pink-out" in which everyone was encouraged to wear pink to support and raise funds for breast cancer awareness. Dig Pink is a national fundraiser sponsored by the Side-Out Foundation. The goal of this fundraiser is to raise money, which will be donated to breast cancer research. The Dig Pink fundraiser invites high school, middle school, and college volleyball teams to take part of this event and sponsor a Dig Pink Night at their school. TAMIU took part of this event, and was able to raise funds and educate people on this important matter.

TAMIU has also made it a task to sell breast cancer awareness products at the bookstore. Pink t-shirts that say "TOGETHER WE CAN FIND A CURE," teddy bears with pink ribbons, pink umbrellas, and pink journals are all for sale at the bookstore. There is even literature on breast cancer, and stories from survivors themselves. All this is to inform the students of TAMIU, and to get them fired up for a great cause.

Student organizations, such as co-ed fraternity Sigma Nu Delta, have also done their part in this fight. They have posted flyers around campus informing students about the statistics and facts concerning breast cancer. These flyers help students, specifically women, learn more about this disease. It helps them get informed and realize that their health is a priority.

Apart from posting flyers, holding volleyball games, and selling merchandise, the pastries have played an important role in raising breast cancer awareness. The women's basketball team went around campus selling pink coated cupcakes. Sigma Nu Delta and Greek sorority Kappa Delta Chi have also baked for this pressing cause.

You can see the pink mania everywhere, even at TAMIU. Students and organizations have all come together to raise breast cancer awareness. As the t-shirt puts it, "TOGETHER WE CAN FIND A CURE," and together we are working towards that.

So, forget about the costumes and ghosts. Let's focus on something greater, like breast cancer.
