Living an eco-friendly lifestyle: Be Green or be out
As the days go by, it seems that global warming is becoming a bigger issue. Sure, it can't compare to economic crisis our nation's facing, or the H1N1 flu that poses a huge threat. But, it is something that is challenging us. So, what are we doing about it? We're going green.
Going green is the initiative to living an eco-friendly lifestyle. It's not the easiest thing, as how you may have to change everyday habits and embrace new ones. But, many are up for it. Being eco-friendly is important today and it is a priority. You can see people purchasing "green bags" to reduce the use of plastic bags. Or, you can see them purchasing a new hybrid car. You may even see people buying eco-friendly clothes, which are made from products such as hemp.
As great as this initiative is, I can't stop getting the feeling that it is simply a trend. It is the new cool thing to do today. If you're not green, then you might as well be out.
It isn't just a feeling. Slogans like "Green is the new black" also enforce this idea of mine. This slogan makes "going green" look like it is a new fashion trend. It has become more than a preventive measure to save our earth's climate and transformed to the trendiest thing to do today.
It seems as though everyone's in on it too. This past summer led to a release of many "green bags." Every major designer released completely unique tote bags, which were made from natural products. BCBG had "Be Chic Be Green," with reaffirming the belief that living an eco-friendly lifestyle is the thing to do. Marc Jacobs put a natural twist on an original design of his. Diane von Furstenberg, a designer known for her vivid prints and colorful designs, added her special touch to these eco-friendly totes. Another factor to consider is that these totes were amazingly affordable. Their prices did not compare to regular prices of these designers. It was also a way to help consumers enjoy their handbags at a smaller price. Designers were blown away by this initiative, but they didn't just sell inexpensive bags.
Fashion week came to town, and it was the perfect time to continue promoting the green lifestyle. Designers everywhere unveiled their new eco-friendly lines, making them the talk of the town. Dresses, skirts, and blouses made completely out of natural products had to be included in these fashion shows in order to be recognized. Eco friendly wardrobe became the thing to sell, and the thing to produce.
It isn't just fashion that celebrates this movement. Celebrities and Hollywood have endorsed it, as well. It all started with film, made be ex-Vice President Al Gore. "The Inconvenient Truth" explained the dangers of global warming, and what may happen to the earth. The film showed the consequences that may occur if we continue to disregard our planet. This was the start of it all, the first call.
Soon, there became events such as Live Earth. Live Earth was a worldwide concert held on July 7, 2007. It featured many artists, such as John Mayer, Madonna, and Shakira. These artists came together for a cause, to help save our planet. Fans became amazed of their dedication, and jumped on the "green" bandwagon as well.
Celebrities have also shared their faces for public service announcements on our climate crisis. These PSA's are featured after television's most watched shows, with the faces of their favorite characters influencing a transformation into a green lifestyle.
Fashion, movies, and celebrities have had a lot to do with the transformation to a green society. They have made it a goal to live an eco friendly lifestyle. They have made it a trend.
So, what if it is a trend? Is it not a good kind? Trends may vary from what belt to wear in the spring, or what colors are in for the fall. But, this trend makes a difference and it speaks to people worldwide. Even if you're only choosing the paperless option for your bank accounts, changing from plastic bags to reusable totes, or unplugging your cell phone charger during the day, you are green. You are living the lifestyle of the moment. You are in.
