Lady Dustdevils tie with Newman University
The women's soccer team faced Newman University for the first time this year on Sept. 30 at the campus field.
The game took off with Newman's Clare Ewald scoring on a five-yard loose ball in the 29th minute.
Later in the first half, the Dustdevils had a corner kick that resulted in a yellow card for Newman goalie, Jennifer Davis.
The Dustdevils chose freshman Cassie Delgado to shoot the penalty kick.
After the whistle was blown, Delgado took three steps and kicked a ball toward the bottom left corner of the goal. Newman's goalie attempted to stop it; however, Delgado's kick gave the Lady Dustdevils their first goal of the game.
The first half ended with the teams tied at one goal each, which remained the score throughout the second half.
The Dustdevil's defense, according to Coach Anna Girdwood, "had an outstanding game and showed their love and heart for the game; they were able to bounce back from an embarrassing defeat (7-0) and prove their skill and dedication."
After being tied 1-1, the game went into overtime, but both teams remained scoreless.
Newman University did, however, have more shot attempts. They had 17 shot attempts (10 on goal) while the Lady Dustdevils had 10 (6 on goal).
According to Valeria Chavez, a member of the Dustdevil's defense, "the team's offense needs to be more aggressive and be at the right place during crucial moments in the game."
Chavez also remarked that her team had improved dramatically since their previous defeat (7-0); she believed communication and skill enabled them to show their potential for the game.
The Dustdevils were led by Delgado's goal, Chavez's defense, and keeper Mary Jo Hall's nine saves. Their current conference record is 0-2-1 and 1-7-1 for the year.
