A Roman Holiday

As Audrey Hepburn put it, "Rome! By all means, Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live." When she said this she was playing Princess Ann in the classic "Roman Holiday," a role which won her an Academy Award. Even though she was acting, she could not have been more truthful when saying this.

Recently, I had the opportunity to embark on my very own Roman holiday. The experience was amazing, and I can truly say that Princess Ann was not mistaken. The memories that I took from this unforgettable place are memories that will stay with me forever.

From riding on double-decker tour buses to eating gelato, I did all the things a good tourist would do. I was exhausted at the end of this trip, but it was well worth it.

Rome has many amazing sights to it. The culture, art, and history that is found in Rome is evident in its main attractions. Starting at the famous Coliseum and all of Rome's ancient ruins, it was an educational experience that taught me a lot of history while enjoying one of the world's greatest treasures. Having a relaxing time at many of the plazas, or piazzas as the Italians prefer, is a common practice amongst the Romans that I fully embraced. The Trevi Fountain, which is a magical place where all your wishes will come true, was magnificently situated in front of my hotel room. Seeing Michelangelo's sculptures situated in the heart of the city is not something that is common in every city that you visit. This is the reason for the greatness of Rome, and anyone can see the immensity of culture that this city brings.

My favorite part of Rome is that it is a big city with a small town appeal. It isn't like New York City, Toronto, or any other city with skyscrapers and tall buildings. It has a rather vintage and homey feel to it, and you feel comfortable as soon as you step foot in this marvelous city.

If you are ever going to go to Italy, do not forget about the food. Trust me, this won't be a trip where you will rely on the nearest McDonald's to stay alive. The Italian food is to die for, and it always leaves you wanting more. From chicken marsala, to a simple chicken fettuccine, the food is completely delicious. The taste is nothing like the local Olive Garden can offer. Each pasta, meatball, and sauce is homemade and cooked to perfection. There is not anything that can send you craving the food back home.

Then, there is dessert. With millions of pastries and chocolates, your sweet craving is sure to be satisfied. Don't worry, you'll be on vacation and the food is all part of the experience. You also cannot forget about the gelato. The famous Italian frozen treat is enjoyable every night of the trip. There is a gelato shop in about every corner of Rome, and there are millions of flavors to try.

All in all, my Roman holiday was a memorable one. I will never forget the Papal audience I attended, or the time I walked all the way up the Piazza di Espagna. If you ever want to get a taste of Rome, pop in "Roman Holiday" to your DVD player. But if you are ever ready for the real experience, it is an unforgettable one.
