Second season of intramural volleyball a success

The intramural volleyball league finished a second successful season under the supervision of Stephen Sayward, Assistant Director of Intramural Sports."In comparison to last year, we had an 80 percent turnaround. Our teams increased from nine to 20 - including a new women's and housing division," said Sayward. The housing division started with flag football, and the Residential Learning Community (RLC) competed against University Village (UV).The final match-up was between Julio's team and the e-Lemon-ators, with Julio's team, a UV team, coming out with a decisive win of 21-15, 21-15.The women's volleyball, however, is new to the volleyball league, and Sayward was proud to see their arrival."It's awesome to make history, but unfortunately, there was only three dedicated teams; however, I look forward to having a legitimate women's team next year," said Sayward.Leading the women's league was Vanessa Ramos, a Junior and Math major, and her team Victorious Secret.Victorious Secret defeated the Slushies in three games: 16-21, 21-16, and 15-12.The highlight of the volleyball intramural playoffs, however, was the co-rec competitive league, which was established last year but was much more competitive this year.Defending champions Kings, Queens & Aces (KQA) made it to the championship and faced Mike's team, a new powerhouse team led by Mike Chavez, a graduate student pursuing a Master's in Business Administration.Mike's team came out on top with a final score of 30-14, 30-25.Nancy Garcia, a two-year member of KQA and a Psychology major, thought her team did well but faced a tough opponent. This was obvious in the second game of the match when KQA managed to tie the score at 17 but failed to close out the game. A deciding factor of the match was Chavez's background in intramurals."I play for a club team in Houston and San Antonio, so I am experienced," said Chavez.Chavez's dominant play led his team throughout the entire season, and according to Candace Dunford, a freshmen and Biology major, he deserves the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.Sayward agreed with Dunford."The All League MVP goes to Mike," said Sayward. "He was solid and kept his team focused."Mike's team, along with Julio's team and Victorious Secret, received championship t-shirts. Sayward hopes to take it a step farther next year."I hope we can choose an MVP [officially] along with a first-team selection, and maybe we can give extra t-shirts to those outstanding players as well," said Sayward.Even though indoor volleyball came to an end, all students can look forward to more volleyball next semester, for sand/beach volleyball will be offered and hosted at the RLC.
