EDITOR SAYS... Graduation is just the beginning

  • Excited fans cheer on the Men's Dustdevils December 6

Once again the semester has come to an end and we will soon see the class of December 2006 graduate and head out into the real world.

What the future holds for them and where life will take them is yet to be seen, but what is for sure is that they will have an advantage over many out there; they will march out with a diploma at hand.

An education is the most important thing in life next to good health. Without an education we cannot taste the full flavor of life.

By this I mean that we are not able to experience more of life's moments to their fullest. How many times have you sat with a group of people having a conversation and then someone says something that you have no earthly idea about?

You try to pretend you know what they are talking about but can't really relate (I am sure it has happened to all of us).

Next thing you know you are desperately trying to switch the topic to one that is more suiting to your understanding.

An education helps in those moments.

An example: Two years ago I was sitting with friends at a coffee shop and one brought up the word Leviathan. I was very confused for I had no clue what they were talking about. It was not until I was sitting in Dr. Laud-Hammond's class last year that I came to know what that word meant.

All of a sudden the conversation that I never quite understood made perfect sense. I finally grasped what that conversation was about and was happy. (You might think I am crazy, but I live for moments like these)

That example is just the start of it.

With an education we start to begin to qualify for those jobs that lead us to that happy old age, satisfied with what we have done with our lives. The reason I say 'start to begin' is because an education is never quite complete. We always learn more as we go and a bachelor's degree is just the beginning (almost like the first step for a baby).

To you that have graduated I say: Congratulations! May you have many blessings and happy moments in life. I envy you, for you are on your way to greater things in life. Grace Gabala, Congrats!
