Student involvement hits new lows

By Peter E. Villanueva

The semester is halfway over and there is very little actual student involvement around campus. I understand that classes are demanding and that there is a need to study hard, but what is going on here? Why is it so boring all the time on campus?

I attended AutMus (the biggest excitement on campus this semester), Oct. 7, and the only students I saw participating were the volunteers. There was no sign (that I noticed) of any participation from the student organizations. Where did the face paint artists of last year or the great tostadas provided by the Student Ambassadors go? The event was great, but you can't have an event as big as AutMus and have such low participation from our student organizations. It is not only AutMus, it is everything on campus.

Campus Activities Board seems to be the only group providing some sort of excitement on campus (though even they are lagging). The only time I see a stand out on the green is when organizations are raising money (here is a thought for you: MAKE -yes I said MAKE- student organizations have an event every now and then in order to reserve tables to raise money). It is as if though all student organizations do is raise money.

It might sound rather harsh of me to voice my opinion in this way, but someone has got to do it!

Student Government, what can I say about them? My reporters and I stopped attending their meetings because all they do is argue about being nice to each other or about what the name of the organization should be or about how President Coutino is doing things (mind you he is actually out there trying hard while the senate sits and discusses office hours or about how no one knows what constitution they are actually running on).

At the last meeting I attended I stood up and asked them to do something for students and it was as if though I was asking them to do something illegal! Representation is what student government is supposed to be there for and I don't see any clear signs of that. I read your minutes and there are a lot of plans on paper, now turn them into actions...stop the internal bickering that only causes SG to become weaker.

It is important to note that there are some organizations that do things on campus; all I am saying is what about the rest of the 50 plus organizations we hear so much about...are they all asleep somewhere?

Prove me wrong people...please!

These are my thoughts, let's hear yours. Write to me:
