Celebrating Washington's Anniversary in Laredo
On Saturday February 18, 2012, Laredo celebrated George Washington's Birthday with the traditional Anheuser-Busch Washington's Birthday Parade in Laredo's downtown streets. The parade consisted of Laredo based organizations and various schools from both districts, as well as special participation from San Antonio and Mexico based groups.
The parade commenced at 9 a.m. at the Laredo Civic Center with the outstanding Anheuser-Bush horses leading the way. Local and state political figures, Mayor Raul Salinas and Senator Judith Zaffirini followed. Continually some of Laredo's dance academies, community banks, and local schools appeared. Attendees eagerly awaited in hopes of snagging some Mardi Gras beads, a popular parade giveaway.
The Martha Washington float was one of the most notable highlights of the parade. Viewers anxiously awaited to see the now popular slippers that were displayed.Traditionally adults and teenagers alike crowded the streets in hopes of catching a glimpse of their Alma maters' bands, cheerleaders, dance teams, and ROTC groups, to cheer them on. With over 150 floats, this family event continues to increase in popularity and participation year after year.
This parade was founded in 1898 by the Yaqui Tribe. In 1924 the parade included 13 girls dressed as in the Colonial times to represent the 13 colonies. WBCA parade started as part of a two day event and which extended to over 30 days of celebration.
